Pantone Color Matching & Batch Consistency
Send us a Pantone number, a physical sample, or L*a*b* target values — our in-house color lab formulates your water-based or UV flexo/gravure ink, confirms it on your substrate with drawdown proofs, and keeps every future batch within ΔE ≤ 2 of the approved standard.
Matched Formulations
Spot colors formulated against the Pantone Matching System, or matched from your physical sample.
Batch-to-Batch Tolerance
Every production batch measured with a spectrophotometer against your approved standard.
Typical Match Time
From color request to approved drawdown proof for standard Pantone references.
What Our Color Lab Can Match
🎨 Pantone References
Spot colors matched against the Pantone Matching System in water-based flexo, water-based gravure and UV flexo systems — formulated for your substrate and anilox, not just on paper.
📦 Physical Samples
Mail us a printed sample, a competitor's swatch, or a piece of your packaging — we measure the target color and reproduce it in the ink system you will run on press.
🔢 L*a*b* Targets
Working with numeric brand standards? Send the L*a*b* values and tolerance from your brand book — we match to the numbers and report the measured result on every batch COA.
* A small number of very bright shades (e.g. Reflex Blue, Rhodamine Red, fluorescent-adjacent tones) have limited gamut in water-based systems — our lab confirms feasibility and the achievable ΔE before any production commitment.
Find Your Pantone Match
Already have a color in mind? Pick it from the color wheel, paste a HEX code, or type a Pantone number (e.g. 186). All references below are PANTONE Solid Coated (C-series) colors — the standard coated stock library used for printing ink. We show the closest matches ranked by ΔE — then you can send the number straight to our color lab in the request form below.
* This tool references the PANTONE Solid Coated library (C-series) only — TCX/TPX (textile/plastics) and Uncoated (U) colors are not included. On-screen values are sRGB approximations — many Pantone shades sit outside the screen gamut. Final color is always confirmed with a drawdown proof on your substrate. PANTONE® is a registered trademark of Pantone LLC; this reference tool is for pre-selection only.
The Color Matching Process
Submit Color
Pantone No., physical sample, or L*a*b* values + your substrate and ink series.
Lab Formulation
Our color lab builds the formula under your real printing conditions.
Drawdown Proof
Proof on your substrate with measured L*a*b* data, sent for approval.
Your Approval
You sign off the physical standard — it becomes the batch reference.
Batch QC
Every batch measured by spectrophotometer; released only within ΔE ≤ 2.
Standard Archived
Approved drawdown, formula and L*a*b* kept on file for every repeat order.
What ΔE ≤ 2 Means for Your Production
ΔE (Delta E) is the measured color distance between a reference and a sample, calculated from L*a*b* values. The smaller the number, the closer the two colors are. It is the industry-standard way to put a number on "does this batch look the same as last month's batch?" — instead of arguing over visual impressions under different lighting.
| ΔE Value | What You See | StarColor Standard |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 1 | Virtually identical, even side by side | Target for brand-critical spot colors |
| ≤ 2 | Very hard to detect a difference side by side | Our release tolerance for every batch |
| 2 – 5 | Noticeable on close comparison | Typical uncontrolled supplier drift |
| > 5 | Clearly different color | Batch rejected — never shipped |

Color Matching FAQ
❓ Can you match any Pantone color?
We match the vast majority of the Pantone Matching System range in water-based and UV flexo/gravure systems. Some very bright shades (especially Reflex Blue, Rhodamine Red and fluorescent-adjacent tones) have limited gamut in water-based systems — our lab confirms feasibility and the achievable Delta E before production.
❓ What do I need to provide to start a color match?
Any one of: a Pantone number, a physical sample of the printed color, or L*a*b* target values. Adding your substrate, printing process (flexo or gravure), anilox specification and target ink series helps us match under real conditions.
❓ How long does a custom color match take?
Standard Pantone references are typically matched within 3-7 working days including drawdown proof. Matching from physical samples or difficult substrates may take slightly longer; our lab confirms the schedule when you submit the request.
❓ What does Delta E ≤ 2 mean for my production?
Delta E (ΔE) is the measured color distance between your approved standard and a production batch. At ΔE ≤ 2, the difference is visually very hard to detect side by side — meaning every reorder of the same ink prints the same color as the sample you approved, without press-side re-matching.
❓ How do you keep repeat orders the same color?
Every approved color is archived as a retained drawdown standard with its L*a*b* data and formulation record. Each production batch is measured with a spectrophotometer against this standard and released only within the ΔE ≤ 2 tolerance.
