FAQ for Estimate Ink Usage

Everything you need to know about estimating ink usage accurately.

How is theoretical ink consumption calculated? +
Theoretical ink usage is calculated based on the surface area of the print, the ink layer thickness (determined by the anilox roll or plate), and the ink's specific gravity. Our calculator automates this by using the formula:
Area × Thickness × Density.
Does this calculator account for printing waste? +
Yes, our calculator is smart enough to automatically include the waste factor for you. To better match actual production scenarios, we use a dynamic waste algorithm: the default base waste rate is 10%; for large orders, it is automatically optimized to 8% to save costs, while for small orders, it is adjusted to 15% to cover the relatively higher machine setup and debugging costs. The final result you see is the recommended usage including the safety margin, and you do not need to add it again.
Why is accurate ink estimation important for my budget? +
Accurate estimation prevents over-purchasing, which ties up capital and risks ink expiration. Conversely, it prevents under-ordering, which can cause costly production delays. Precise calculation helps you bid more competitively on packaging projects.
What factors affect ink usage in Flexo and Gravure? +
Key factors include the anilox roll volume (for Flexo), cylinder depth (for Gravure), substrate absorbency, and the specific pigment concentration of the ink. Our tool helps standardize these variables for a consistent estimate.
Can I use this for custom color matching? +
Yes. While the volume calculation remains consistent, custom colors (Pantone matches) may have different densities. If you are using our custom mixing service, this calculator provides the base volume needed for your formulation request.
