Compliance Framework: What We Test & Why It Matters

Printing inks used in food, medical, and consumer packaging must comply with strict regulatory frameworks. StarColor tests every relevant product family against the standards below. This pillar page explains each framework and provides downloadable test reports.

Food Contact Compliance

  • FDA 21 CFR 175.300 — US food contact resinous coatings
  • EU 10/2011 — Plastic food contact materials
  • China GB 4806 — Food contact materials & articles
  • Swiss Ordinance A — Printing inks for food packaging

Chemical & Environmental

  • RoHS (EU) 2015/863 — Restriction of hazardous substances
  • REACH SVHC — Substances of very high concern
  • VOC Content — Volatile organic compounds
  • Heavy Metals — Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr(VI)

Medical & Hygiene

  • ISO 10993-5 — Cytotoxicity
  • ISO 10993-10 — Irritation & sensitization
  • ISO 13485 — Medical device quality management
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 — Textile skin safety

Product Safety Documents

  • MSDS / SDS — Material safety data sheets
  • TDS — Technical data sheets
  • Migration Test Reports — Overall & specific migration
  • Low Migration Declarations — For sensitive applications

Frequently Asked Questions — Ink Compliance

❓ What is FDA 21 CFR 175.300?

FDA 21 CFR 175.300 is the US regulation for resinous and polymeric coatings used as food contact surfaces. It specifies which raw materials are permitted and sets migration limits. Our water-based flexo inks are tested to this standard for indirect food contact applications.

❓ What does "low migration" mean for printing inks?

Low migration inks are formulated to minimize the transfer of ink components through packaging into food or pharmaceutical products. They use high-purity raw materials, avoid prohibited photoinitiators (such as benzophenone and ITX), and are tested for overall and specific migration limits.

❓ Do you provide EU 10/2011 compliance documentation?

Yes. For plastic food contact materials, we provide declarations of compliance and migration test reports for applicable product families. Contact our technical team for the specific ink series you are using.

❓ What is the difference between RoHS and REACH?

RoHS restricts specific hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.) in electrical equipment. REACH is a broader EU regulation covering the registration, evaluation, and authorization of chemicals, including SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern). We test our inks for both.

❓ Can I request a custom test for my specific application?

Absolutely. We work with accredited third-party laboratories (SGS, Intertek, etc.) and can arrange custom migration, biocompatibility, or sterilization testing based on your substrate and end-use conditions.

❓ Are these test reports free to download?

Yes, the reports on this page are available for download. For additional documentation (custom tests, declarations under NDA), please contact our technical team.

Disclaimer: Test reports on this page are representative of standard product families. Actual compliance depends on the specific ink grade, substrate, printing process, and end-use conditions. Customers should conduct their own risk assessment and confirm regulatory compliance for their final application. Full documentation under NDA is available for qualified buyers.
